A child's closet is much like their room, a total mess! One way to solve this problem is to put into use one of the many organization systems, or come up with your own closet design ideas. Just remember to keep it simple, and easy to use.
A little girl would need the different clothing rods. But not to the extent that an older girl would. For a younger girl, a rod or two that only stretch halfway would probably be adequate. A younger girl would need more shelving then rods. Having the shorter rods would enable you to create a shelving system for toys to keep them up off the floor and to make the whole bedroom a tidier place.
Bin Toy Organizer
A little boy's closet has very little to hang, unless you don't use a dresser. For him, a single rod would more than suffice. Like little girls, a shelving system would be beneficial for a little boy's closet. Little boy's closet would also benefit from the use of some sort of bin on the shelf. Bins can vary in prices according to the type of bin; cloth bins tend to be more expensive than the standard plastic ones that can be purchased at dollar stores. Labeling bins would further enable young boys in both finding the desired toy and putting it back where it belongs.
Most older girls' closets have a lot of different length of clothes hanging in them: dresses, shirts, skirts, and pants. One way to create a more organized system is to have two closet rods: one on top for shorter things like shirts and skirts and one on the bottom for the longer items like dresses and pants. Pair that with shelving along the floor for shoes and perhaps some sort of shelving for all of the bags that most girls seem to collect, and you have an easy system that is inexpensive.
Like little boys, older boys do not need more than one closet rod. However, unlike the younger set, older boys need an easy way of discarding dirty clothes other than on the floor. A good way to accomplish this is to have some sort of receptacle in the closet. A sorter bin is a wonderful thing to use, as they can put lights, darks, and whites into separate areas. A sorter bin that is labeled is even better.
If you have multiple age groups in a room, you would benefit from having two closet rods and whatever shelving system as would fit, although the shelving would be more for the shoes than toys!
There are more ways then mentioned here to design an organized closet for children and teenagers. You can do it yourself as mentioned here, or you can purchase ready-made closet systems either from a store or online.
